New software updates take Nokia X6 and 5230 up to speed

Two rather popular smartphones in the both ends of the market spectrum - the Nokia X6 and the Nokia 5230 have just got some serious software updates that bring along several new features besides the regular bug fixes.
Perhaps the biggest change in both devices is that kinetic scrolling has gone deeper down the interface and now you can enjoy it in grid menus - just as on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic after its latest update.
Furthermore, the Nokia X6 and Nokia 5230 will get the latest version of the touch web browser (ver. 7.2). Ovi Maps on those two will now get Lifecasting integration so you can share your locations with friends on Facebook.
Next up, the X6 and 5230 will also get Over-the-air software and app updating plus Flash video Phase 3 and the latest versions of Ovi Sync 2.0 and Ovi Music.
As usual the update is available through the Nokia Software Updater desktop application.

Motorola looking better in Q1 2010 but loses top spot in the US

Motorola's financial results are out - the mobile phone division is still in the red zone but there's a noticeable improvement over last year's. And they still have time to improve further before the planned split in two during the first quarter next year.
The Mobile Devices department posted an operating loss of 192 million US dollars, which is a marked improvement over the 545 million dollar loss for the same quarter last year.
Motorola introduced six Android-powered phones this quarter and shipped a total of 8.5 million phones, 2.3 million of which have been smartphones. The number of shipped smartphones is actually up from the previous quarter (2 million smartphones from a total of 12 million handsets shipped).
However, Motorola lost the top spot in the US as Apple shipped 8.8 million iPhones and overtook Motorola's results.
The other departments of Motorola performed better than they did the same period last year, so total earnings for the company came up to 69 million US dollars (earnings for Q4 of 2009 were 142 million dollars).

LG with surprising Q1 results, will focus on smartphones in Q2

LG announced the financial results for Q1 of 2010. Their global sales and profit are lower than expected as they have concentrated on developing products and sales channels in emerging markets. They expect a turn for change as they refocus back on smartphones in Q2 2010.
Handset shipments grew by about 20% to 27.1 million units as compared to the same quarter last year. Despite increased shipments, profit fell on year on year basis (19.7%) due to the heavy focus on emerging markets.
LG are keeping their chins up though and they've got big plans for the next quarter - a 5% growth in shipments compared to Q2 of 2009 and a "double digit" growth compared to this quarter. They also plan to bump up the profitability with new products and an emphasis on smartphones.
The big winners for Q2 are expected to be the LG GT540 Optimus, the LG VS740 (another Android, the LG LU2300 most likely) and the LG Cookie2 (from the report it isn't quite clear which of the multitude of Cookies it is).
